Kristy Guevara-Flanagan, Director/Producer, picked up her first Super-8 camera in middle school and hasn’t put the camera down since. She has produced and directed a number of short films including: El Corrido de Cecilia Rios, a documentary that chronicles the violent death of fifteen-year-old Cecilia Rios. The film won the Golden Spire Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival, was an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival and was subsequently licensed by the Sundance Channel. Since graduating with an MFA in Film Production from San Francisco State University, Kristy has worked as a filmmaker, an arts educator, and a film and video editor. She is currently an assistant professor in art, film and broadcast at Diablo Valley College and in production on a new feature (with Kelcey Edwards) entitled, The History of the Universe as Told by Wonder Woman; a film about female superheroes, warrior princesses and other icons of women's empowerment. Going on 13 is her first feature documentary.
Dawn Valadez, Producer/Director, After 20 years in the youth and social service field with a master's degree in social welfare from UC Berkeley ('92) Dawn has stepped into the world of documentary filmmaking. Dawn has a long history of supporting and developing programs that serve children, youth and families locally and nationally, as a successful fundraiser, former board member of Youth Together and eXcel Youth Zone, trainer and facilitator focusing on youth development, multiculturalism, cultural competency & leadership skills, and as a consultant to AmeriCorps, the Community Network for Youth Development, CalSAC, 4-H, Girls Inc, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and many other programs. As the development director at Davis Street Family Resource Center she is raising capital funds during the worst recession since the depression - successfully! Going on 13 is her first feature film.
J. Clements, Executive Producer, J Clements, Executive Producer, has produced and directed award-winning films that have aired on PBS and the Discovery Channel. Her films have also showcased at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Clements has worked in short form directing for Maturity Broadcast News and has line produced utilizing crews from the BBC. She is a former ITVS producer, ITVS Production Manager and editing consultant. Her current consulting includes producers from New York to Alaska. Clements also teaches media to teenagers and young adults. She has an MA in film from Stanford University.
Corey Ohama, Editor, received an MFA in Film from San Francisco State University and a B.A. in Semiotics from Brown University. She works as a documentary editor in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her current project is A Tale of Two Sisters, which looks at the experience of two Japanese-American sisters: one who fled the internment of Japanese-Americans in California, ending up in an ashram in Harlem where she worked for peace alongside future civil rights leaders Bayard Rustin and James Farmer; the other who stayed behind and was sent to a internment camp in Colorado. Going On 13 is her first feature-length work as an editor.
Gerry Watson, Director of Photography, has been working in Bay Area television since 1990 running the gamut from Technical Director to Producer but has found his calling in photojournalism. He was the primary photographer for KPIX CBS 5's multi-Emmy award winning Investigative Unit led by the reporter Anna Werner.
Sara Porto Nolan, Associate Producer. Nolan’s career began in print journalism. After leaving her “old life” of pop-culture reporting behind for the world of social justice documentaries, she worked at Toxic Comedy Pictures where she was associate producer for a feature documentary on global climate change titled Everything's Cool, and produced the DVD for the award-winning doc Blue Vinyl (for which she also coordinated outreach projects with Working Films). She co-produced When the Road Bends: Tales of a Gypsy Caravan, and associate produced Amir Bar-Lev's My Kid Could Paint That before moving to the Bay Area and becoming a vaquera.
Open Content, Animation, is an unconventional media company. Founded by Eriq Wities and Daniel Yaffe, the two have been working together to create impacting social and media projects for over 9 years. Childhood friends from San Diego, California, the two UC Berkeley graduates formed Open Content in San Francisco early in 2007. Their works have recieved various awards and recognition, showcasing their projects all over the world.
Eva Moss, Outreach Coordinator has been involved in documentary filmmaking since graduating from Smith College in 2003. She has worked as both an editor and producer on many films whose topics range from alleviating water shortages in Kenya and Mali, Aboriginal artists and the intersection of storytelling and painting, the transition of a transsexual woman as seen through the eyes of her 3 young nieces (No Dumb Questions, Melissa Regan), a family working to understand their child's learning disabilities, a sequel to The Celluloid Closet (Here's Looking At You Boy, Michael Ehrenzweig), a gay couple's experience trying to conceive a child through insemination, Don't Ask Don't Tell and those working to overturn it (Ask Not, Johnny Symons), a 90 year old successful actress who started her career at 70, and the first documentary made by gay filmmakers depicting gay people (Word Is Out, Veronica Selver, Janet Cole). She sees filmmaking as a means to promote social change and introspection, give voice to those without a voice, and share with the world that which is rarely seen.
